That post by C. E. Murphy was great, and totally reflects my experience, too, and I was growing up in the bad old 1970s. She says at the end,

It would never have occurred to me that it was any less likely that I could participate in those worlds because I was a girl. The defining characteristic wasn’t boy or girl, it was *magic*.

That was exactly how I felt, too. There were plenty of women in the stories I read, but I liked stories with male leads too, and would stick myself into those stories with no problems when I played imaginary games based on them.
