That was just my impression. I didn't think he beat her, but I did think that what we saw of their interaction was unhealthy. Could it have just been a fight, or them having trouble in their relationship? Sure. But while we certainly see how much he cares about her, in the form of his willingness to risk everything to get her back, I didn't get the impression that he regretted verbally lashing out at her. Maybe it's partially because he yelled at her and she just took it.

Again, that's just how it struck me in a gut reaction. They interact so briefly that there's not enough evidence to determine the nature of their relationship on the whole, so I could certainly be jumping to conclusions. Maybe when I watch it again, I'll revise my initial impression.
