A majority of the fiction writers I have known who are also editors admit their editing skills not only do not serve their fiction writing well, it indeed hinders it. That is not to say this is true for everyone. But I have found that the act of writing requires a different set of "muscles" than editing. If you are thinking on one level while working on the other, you are often getting nowhere.

Now there are certainly people who can do both at the same time, and some of them can actually write amazingly creative work while still doing editing. But they are more rare than you might think.
