I actually agree. The last time I kept up with the Hugos was back in 2003. While I felt Hominds was an excellent book and think the Robert J. Sawyer is a great guy, my pick would have been Kiln People by David Brin, which was possibly less deep, but--in my mind--more fun.
It's a shame that so few of the great books I'm reading anyway get nominated on the awards lists. I really should find out what the major YA awards are (if there are any) and follow those, since so much of what I'm reading lately falls in that category. It'd be particularly great if there were YA F&SF awards. And if those don't exist now, someday I must become rich and philanthropic and invent some.
