Friend recommendations have always been a big source for me also--I think it expands a bit when you not only have local friends, but all of the cool people you communicate with online! And of course, if you're "friends" with people whose blogs you read (truer of some than others, depending on how reciprocal they are), how could you not read their stuff when it comes out? :)
