I find that whole "boys won't read girl books" excuse interesting, especially in light of the number of toddler boys I hear about wanting to play the same games their female cousins play. Toddler boys might be just as excited to spin around in skirts and wear fairy wings and enjoy kittens and butterflies and flowers as the girls, but parents are trained to squash those impulses right out of them. And then we wonder why they "won't" read girl books as elementary schoolers.
