Why Buy?

When I worked at the bookstore, I had to put a limit on my buying habits. I bought books to the extent that I probably wasn't actually earning much from my bookstore job. New Year's rolled around and I made a resolution that I've been pretty good about keeping: Don't buy a book unless you're going to take it home and read it that night. Or if it's a graphic novel. 'Cause those are quick reads, and also indespensible.

I always find it interesting to learn why people buy books, and mindyklasky has put up a great poll in her journal, asking for people's opinions. Some of the comments are really interesting as well.

I really like working for Half Price Books. We not only get a great discount, but we can also check out items like books and DVDs. It has saved me a bundle by allowing me to watch a movie or do some research without having to buy everything.

I still end up spending plenty, but the option to "borrow" is pretty awesome.

The option to "borrow" also kept me from buying books if I wasn't going to read them right away--I did that a lot with hard covers. (I especially appreciated that I could borrow The DaVinci Code, which I felt was important for me to have read, but was really glad I didn't have to spend any money on...)
