Apologies for the long blog absence without warning! I was off on a family vacation that involved not one but two family weddings in beautiful Michigan. We had a lovely time, and when I returned home I jumped right into finishing up the last round of autobiographical essays, which included an original piece by Tananarive Due. Due and her husband, Steven Barnes, who has also written an autobiography for the autobio project, ought to be considered one of the power couples of the SFF world (if they're not already). They're both amazing. If you've not read either of them, you're missing out. (Luckily, their books are pretty widely available, so it's a loss that can be rectified pretty easily at your local library.)

So the last round of autobio has wrapped up, I got to do a cool secret project for Wizards of the Coast, and a computer crash didn't stop me from completing an assignment of obituaries. All in all, things are good on the work front, and I'm looking ahead to the assignments that come next! The Steampunk Musha Kickstarter's success means I'll be doing some adventure writing with Rick Hershey and maybe a short story or two coming up!

I'm also catching up on Eureka. Since my writer-buddy Margaret Dunlap worked on that show, I ponied up and bought a season pass on Amazon so I can watch it on the television. I just finished watching episode 4, which involves a scene where two characters start a D&D game, basically functioning as a step toward helping one of them cope with grief. I thought it was an incredibly touching moment and a wonderful way to celebrate the power of shared storytelling.

Speaking of writer friends, several writer friends of mine are already on to the next project, and here's their news:

  • Since in writer-time, Eureka wrapped ages ago, Margaret's been keeping busy working on a new project, the web show The Lizzie Bennet Diaries. It's a modernized Pride and Prejudice, and it sounds right up my alley. More when I've had a chance to catch up on the already-existing episodes!

  • Fellow Substrater Max Gladstone just announced his fantastic news that he's sold an additional two books to Tor. This comes on top of his first two book contract -- his debut novel releases this October and is available for preorder now.

  • I can't remember if I linked back to Francesca Forrest's "Tilia Songbird," which was published in Gigantosaurus at the beginning of May. If not, here it is! If I did, and you didn't read it the first time, I hope this inspires you to go check it out.

  • And for a celebration of meta-text, John "jaQ" Andrews just had his e-book guide to Castle come out! (It's a book about a show about a guy who writes books -- it gets awesomely circular, and I can't think of a better person to write about it than John.) Check out Quicklet on Castle Season 3, in which John has promised to explain the conspiracy behind the death of Beckett's mother.

A couple of interesting bits of knowledge about digital publishing came to my attention recently, both first via PW, but their link to the B&N/nook divide didn't work, so you get a TechCrunch column (via John Andrews) instead.

Here's the deal with B&N/nook: according to John Biggs at TechCrunch, the company has announced that they're considering spinning off nook as a separate company. What strikes me about this is that it's really not a new strategy for B&N to split off branches of the company into their own separate companies. B&N, B&N.com, and B&N College were all, at one point, separate companies. I want to say that the college stores are now back under B&N proper, but I'm not sure if B&N.com is operating as a separate company or not. Functionally, as far as the user is concerned, they're all the same, and they certainly share customer information among the companies. So it wouldn't surprise me if nook splits off for now, and as B&N figures out where it's going in the marketplace, it may recombine again in the future. That seems to be how B&N typically works over the long haul.

Now, granted, whether they can compete long term with Amazon and Apple, who knows? I hope so, because, well, you all know my customer loyalty bias. I do think it's too bad that the nook Simple Touch isn't doing better, since it's a pretty great little device -- there are some things that my nook First Edition did better, but the Simple Touch has some excellent features, and the hyperlinking works very well (for books that are formatted properly for the device; as always, some formats work better than others).

The industry is changing, and according to Hyperion CEO Ellen Archer, in a Digital Book World interview with Jeremy Greenfield, it's not just digital that's making the impact, but media arms. Archer is the publisher behind the Richard Castle novels (with Tom Straw writing as the fictional Castle); the most recent Nikki Heat mystery came in at #1 on a bestseller list (she doesn't mention which one), and she notes that another media tie-in also hit the #1 spot. Since Disney is the parent company to Hyperion, and ABC is the parent company to Disney, Hyperion has a lot of connections in that world, and Archer is projecting that as the future.

All that said, I think we've still got a long ways to go before the market for paper books burns out. (Pun intended.) There really is still an experiential quality there -- and there are still plenty of people who aren't willing to have a devoted digital reading device and hate staring at the computer screen when they're relaxing. Granted, that number grows smaller... but the market is still there.

Although, if it's true that the market for consumer goods is driven by fourteen year olds, the industry shift may come a lot sooner than I anticipate.

I don't watch a lot of TV. We don't actually have television service, and I watch my current TV shows from my computer screen. We do have a Roku for our Netflix service and find it incredibly useful, and we've rented movies from Amazon that way as well. Recently, I gave HuluPlus a look, but since it carries only one of the three television shows I'm currently committed to (yes, TV is a relationship: I have an ongoing friendship with Castle and Leverage, and sadly a limited remaining time of my dedication to Eureka), we won't be continuing to use that service. While I have it, though, I thought I'd try out two new television programs on the big screen to see if they'll be worth following on the computer later on. I speak, of course, of Grimm and Once Upon a Time, two fairy tale spin offs of very different flavors. The fairy tale hook clearly appealed to me, but whether or not I'll be staying to see how they go depends very much on the shows themselves.

Of course, I'm not the only one to pay attention to their very close release schedules. Teresa Jusino over at Tor.com posted her response to the pair, which I intentionally didn't read before writing this. (However, most everything over at Tor.com is worth reading, so I'll blindly recommend going and comparing her notes to mine.)



Here's my assessment: Grimm is actually an urban fantasy in the UF Noir style (ala the Dresden Files and others) that uses fairy tale elements for its paranormal component. As it's made by some of the writers who were on the teams of Angel and Buffy, the similarities don't entirely surprise me: in some ways, the series strikes me as Buffy if the core audience being targeted were mid-career adults rather than teens and twenties. It's also a cop show, and I suspect it may end up feeling like a cop show with paranormal elements rather than a fantasy with cop show elements. I think that may work in its favor.

Once Upon a Time, on the other hand, is a fairy tale writ long. In the tradition of fairy tale retellings like Bill Willingham's Fables comics, Sondheim's Broadway musical Into the Woods, and (most recently) [livejournal.com profile] jimhines's Princess Quartet, Once Upon a Time takes the familiar stories and twists them, just a bit, recasting real fairy tale characters as unknowing modern-day humans, for whom time has stopped. The only one to know about the Curse that has brought them out of their fairy tale reality and into the real world is Henry, a little boy, who is the biological son of the destined hero (the daughter of Snow White and Prince Charming), and the adoptive son of the Evil Queen. The hero herself, Emma Swan, is a tough girl loner who doesn't really believe in Henry's story, but finds herself drawn to the child. The cuts between the fairy tale backstory and the modern break-the-curse plot honor the romantic atmosphere of fairy tales -- and, thus far, aside from some off-stage cutting out of hearts, are doing it in a pretty tame way. Sure there's swordfighting and sorcerous battles, but it's not the sort of gritty and dark flavor that Fables and Into the Woods brought us. The fairy tale versions of the characters don't have anywhere near the depth they do in Jim Hines's books.



But that may be part of the point: while Grimm is, from the get go, down in the brutal side of those beloved and scary German folk tales, Once Upon a Time is Disneyfied, right through the use of the name Melificent for the wicked fairy who cursed Sleeping Beauty. Because the team of Once Upon a Time, was also part of the team on Lost, there is some worry that the fairy tale elements may end up being a lie after all -- but from some quick research on what the creators wanted to bring to the show, it doesn't sound like that's their intention. But while I think Grimm starts by knowing what it is, as a show, right from the very beginning (and, by virtue of the Monster/Villain-of-the-Week potential, could go on for seasons), Once Upon a Time launches its major plot in episode one, and that full plot arc needs to be resolved in the first season to feel like the story is going anywhere. The quest structure could work in its favor if they can raise the stakes for Season 2 -- or it could mean that the show has a one season maximum until we all get back to happily ever after.

It may sound like I'm being hard on Once Upon a Time here; I am being pretty critical, because it's a subgenre I'm invested in. But I'll definitely say that after watching two episodes (I've only seen the pilot of Grimm), I'm drawn in enough to keep watching, at least until the end of the season -- or however long it survives this season! I have a feeling that in the current TV climate, Grimm with its gritty appeal and its ambiguous morality will find its audience with no trouble at all -- and unless things get too scary for my fluffy-bunny-horror self, I'll be sticking with it.

I have a post I intend to make that has actual thoughts and ideas in it -- two of them in the works, now that I think about it. However, they require me to have time to sit down and think those thoughts, and then change them into words, and as I'm in the middle of an upcoming deadline for a somewhat intense project, that time just hasn't been available.

So instead, I present you with interesting things around the Internet.


  • The Guardian published a chat with cast and crew members of the Harry Potter series about coming to the conclusion. Favorite quote, unsurprisingly from Rupert Grint (regarding Alan Rickman/Snape): "Alan sort of stayed in character between takes. I mean, he wasn't evil or anything. But he's quite intimidating."

  • In the Telegraph, Booker prize winner Penelope Lively criticizes e-book readers -- but then goes on to say that they'd be useful on vacation, or in the hospital. I find the pairing of those statements silly. You can love print books and find e-books incredibly convenient and it doesn't make you a "bloodless nerd."

  • In TV tie-in news -- no, it's not a new Richard Castle book this time. It is from NBC: they're publishing a fictional history book about Pawnee, the setting for Parks & Recreation. Meta, meta, meta.

  • Rose Fox at Genreville does the update on the latest gender disparity in an SFF anthology, showing how the conversation progressed among writers online quite nicely.

  • Lastly, a good friend of mine passed along this essay on productivity for creative people by Alexander Kjerulf that I find brilliant. I'm trying to implement some of these philosophies into my own work-flow.

Richard Castle just keeps making the news. In today's TV Guide, it was announced that Marvel Entertainment is going to be "adapting" Castle's "early novels" as graphic novels -- the first, Richard Castle's Deadly Storm, features Castle's "famous hero" Derrick Storm in one of his early adventures. The world just keeps getting more meta! (Castle isn't the only one who has a graphic novel coming soon. Real-life writer [livejournal.com profile] mdhenry -- supposedly the ghost writer for his character, glamazombie Amanda Feral -- announced a while ago that Amanda will be starring in a comic book adaptation of her memoirs from Dabel Brothers. Can't wait for more news on that front!)

In news from the Abbott Office, work has been pouring in. The life of a freelancer is full of this phenomenon: in January, I had almost no work and was trying like mad to find new clients. This month, I've had work come in from old clients and some new editors who I'd been recommended to by folks I've worked with in the past. Some of the new assignments are brilliantly fun, and I'm excited about having a full plate.

I was talking to Max Gladstone about how this has impacted my fiction writing schedule (which is, as you might guess, rather nonexistent lately). [livejournal.com profile] jeff_duntemann has given these words of wisdom more than once: "That's key, kiddies: If you want to be an SF writer, don't be a writer in your day job." To say that I'm beginning to see from his point of view would be an understatement -- I've felt the danger of being a freelance writer impacting my fiction writing for some time. It's come to a head recently as other aspects of my life have also demanded more of my time. Max suggested that writing copy and writing creatively can come from different parts of the brain, and if the computer burn out is keeping me from writing (which is sometimes the case), why not try long hand? I've not yet tried it, but it instantly struck me as a brilliant idea. If there were ever a way to get my brain in a different gear, longhand would be it. So, I may be giving that a try.

I'm also getting closer and closer to my start date as a teacher for Mommy-Baby Fitness, which means prep in that area and meetings with founder Ann Cowlin, who had an interview with new instructor Lauren Hefez posted today. My favorite quote is this one, which I think applies to more than just fitness: "At Dancing Thru Pregnancy® we are fond of the notion that if you know a certain behavior is the best for a situation, it is smart to chose that behavior. If you do not, you are sabotaging yourself."

If only I applied that better to all aspects of my life!

I don't know if I've mentioned it here, but I love Castle. I think it's a fun, usually lighthearted mystery show, and (particularly early on), it said a lot about the writing process. There's often this moment where Nathan Fillion's character, the eponymous Richard Castle, is looking at the mystery they're solving and thinking that the details aren't consistent -- or, at least, that they don't make a very good story.

It reminds me a little bit of the Yann Martel quotes (he apparently uses the idea frequently) that he chooses to look at the world (at least in his novels) as though there is a God, because that makes the better story. But I digress.

One of the really fun things about Castle is the novels written by the fictional Castle that appear in our real world: Heat Wave and Naked Heat both hit the bestseller lists when they came out (around #16, I think), which means that the fictional Richard Castle is, in reality, a bestselling author. It boggles the mind. I really think there's a college paper here about postmodernism and the metatextuality of rewriting reality to reflect fiction or some such. In the mean time, I think it's just fun. (Jessica Fletcher of Murder She Wrote also has a number of books published under her name, though I think her success was always more modest, both in the real world and in her own TV show, than Castle's.)

It also makes me think about other fictional writers I've enjoyed in books I've read and consider how much meta-text real-world writers create with fictional writers who then ended up writing, say, short stories or something. For example, celebutante and glamazombie Amanda Feral, who used a "ghost writer" ([livejournal.com profile] mdhenry) for her memoirs but writes smut on her own. There have to be other authors doing this -- I'd love to be reminded of any you can think of. :)

I started thinking about this today because someone brought Richard Castle, the character, to Barbara Vey's blog party today (it's mystery/thriller day!), and rather than assuming the character had been brought along in the prose, my initial thought was that whoever is responsible for the Castle twitter account had, in fact, donated something to the party! Alas, no "official" Castle presence, but the prizes and party are stellar nonetheless.

I'll admit it.

I helped Heat Wave hit the New York Times bestseller list. (It was at 26 last week when we checked; this week it's at 28. I'm curious where it placed its premier week, but I thought, tie-in mystery novel for a TV show? How could that hit the New York Times? Silly me underestimating the power of the media.)

For those of you who have no idea what I'm talking about, character Richard Castle, played by Nathan Fillion, is an author who has insinuated himself into a NYC homicide unit with the excuse of "researching" his new novel series. The model for his new character is Detective Kate Beckett, played by Stana Katic. The show (Mondays on ABC) features not only the usual crime solving, but also plenty of references to how writing and plotting a novel, particularly a mystery, is like solving a murder. The dialog about the writing process (and Castle's rants on proper use of grammar) have endeared the show to me more than any of the other crime shows out there.

It's like Murder She Wrote if Jessica Fletcher had been a celebrity bestselling author. It's very, very much fun.

Castle's new novel, Heat Wave, hit real world stores (with Fillion doing actual book signings) in September; it's just been released in the show. It's all right -- it's short and fast paced, and due to the show tie-ins, ends up being fun. I don't think it really stands alone as a mystery outside of its connection to the show, but overall, it's a fun read. (It's also blurbed by Stephen J. Cannell and James Patterson, who, along with Michael Connelly, have appeared on the show as Castle's poker buddies.) I love the multimedia aspects (and I especially love that mystery writers are guest starring). I have no idea how this is impacting overall book sales for those folks, but I like to think that each of them got a little bump from appearing on TV.
