I caught a glance of the sad news of Madeline L'Engle's death in a blog headline, and only later had a moment to look for her obituary online. Posted at nearly 3 p.m. this afternoon, the Hartford Courant online ran a tribute to this amazing author. (Several other papers and CNN have posted the AP release.)
This was the first moment at which I realized she had lived in Connecticut. The nursing home where she resided was only about an hour from where I live. In an age where I'm in touch with so many of the authors I admire via the internet (or better, have had the opportunity to meet them in person), it never once occurred to me to try sending her a letter. Now, I'm mourning a bit of a missed opportunity. So Madeline L'Engle, where ever you are now, thanks!
