It's amazing what a google search can yeild when you're doing research--and sometimes it's not information via a website. I found the Uniformology website, which sells collections of plate pictures of uniforms from all over the places, but couldn't tell if the resource I was looking to purchase would include the type of uniform an enlisted-man would wear. So, I e-mailed Bruce Bassett-Powell to ask.

Not only did Mr. Bassett-Powell e-mail me a quick response, he happens to be an expert about the German army in 1873, and he's twice now e-mailed me answers to questions I wouldn't have even known to come up with before speaking with him. Cowboys and Aliens: Worlds at War chapter two will be infinitely better for his help!

Speaking of research, I'd love to hear from anyone who has been to Berlin about their impressions of the city--particularly sounds and smells. Obviously none of you were there in 1873, but I can use you as a jumping point. Any takers?

Berlin is bicycle heaven.

There are no hills. It is as flat as flat as can be. Notice in every picture of Berlin, the ground seems to be perfectly flat.

Also, it's quite humid. These days it smells like Istanbul from all of the Turkish immigrants and Doener stands, but in 1873, I imagine it would have smelled quite industrial.

Thanks so much! That's great information. Now I have to wonder about the sewer system, given the flat ground... no hills to hide behind. ;)

Sounds seem like they would be unique to the time period.

Smells - hm, I lived in Germany 20 years ago. I would think the bakery, horse droppings, sausages. That's just a pure guess.

I kind of like that combination... (Maybe less in the case of the horse droppings than the bakery and sausages!)
